This itinerary covers the lake systems of the Rift Valley, the forests of the Kenyan highlands, and the northern semi-arid zones to build an extraordinary species list alongside powerful landscape experiences.

Day by Day

Your Itinerary

Each day is presented in order, with the exact timing adjusted around flights, wildlife movement, and guest pace.

01

Nairobi Arrival and Forest Introduction

Arrive in Nairobi and transfer to a property on the forest edge. Afternoon birding walk in Karura Forest or the Nairobi arboretum - an excellent introduction to Kenya's resident forest species. Evening briefing with your specialist birding guide.

02

Rift Valley Lakes - Nakuru and Elmenteita

Drive to Lake Nakuru National Park - one of Africa's great birding spectacles. Flamingos, Goliath herons, and over 400 recorded species within the park boundary. Afternoon at Lake Elmenteita, a quieter soda lake with important pelican and flamingo colonies.

03

Lake Naivasha and Papyrus Zone

Morning boat safari on Lake Naivasha targeting papyrus canary, lesser jacana, and African fish eagle. Afternoon walk through Hell's Gate National Park for cliff-nesting vultures, Verreaux's eagle, and abundant dry-country species.

04

Aberdare and Highland Forest Zone

Drive to the Aberdare highlands. Full day in montane forest targeting Kenya endemics and Afromontane specials. Jackson's francolin, Aberdare cisticola, and giant forest hog in the undergrowth. Altitude shifts dramatically and so does the species list.

05

Samburu - Northern Dry Country Specialists

Early morning flight to Samburu National Reserve. Afternoon drive introducing the arid-zone birding list: vulturine guineafowl, Somali bee-eater, D'Arnaud's barbet, and Donaldson-Smith's nightjar at dusk. The dry riverine forest holds extraordinary species density.

06

Full Day in Samburu - River and Bush

Full day birding along the Ewaso Ng'iro River. The river corridor holds lush vegetation surrounded by dry acacia bush - a meeting point for dozens of species. Afternoon excursion into the reserve for plains and woodland species.

07

Final Birding Morning and Return to Nairobi

Dawn birding session in Samburu before transferring to the airstrip. Fly back to Nairobi for international connections. Your guide provides a full species list summary for the journey.
